Trivia About Marty Best Picture Movie

Ahead of the 93nd Academy Awards this weekend, we thought we'd take a look back through the history books to pick out interesting facts and trivia from Oscars past.

From the various records for oldest and youngest winners to trivia such as why is it called an Oscar, there's a fact here for anyone with an interest in the Oscars that you are welcome to use to amaze your friends on the big night.

Has an Oscar ever won an Oscar?

They have! Oscar Hammerstein II – yes, he of Rodgers and Hammerstein fame – won two Oscars for Best Original Song: Lady Be Good's 'The Last Time I Saw Paris' and State Fair's 'It Might As Well Be Spring'.

He's the only person called Oscar to win an Oscar though.

All hopes now rest on Oscar Isaac.

Why are they called Oscars anyway?

Officially, the winners take home an Academy Award of Merit, but the nickname Oscar was officially adopted in 1939. What's less clear is how it ended up with that moniker.

A biography of Bette Davis claimed that she nicknamed the award after her first husband Harmon Oscar Nelson. However, the most popular origin story is that an Academy executive secretary called Margaret Herrick saw the award in 1931 and said it looked like her "Uncle Oscar".

Bonus fact! Since 1950, the winners (or their relatives) of the Oscars can't sell the awards without offering them to the Academy first for $1.

Who's the youngest and oldest Oscar winner ever?

The youngest winner of any Oscar ever was Shirley Temple who, when she was only six years old, won the first-ever Academy Juvenile Award in 1934, an award that is no longer given out.

If we're talking competitive awards, then the youngest winner is Tatum O'Neal, who won Best Supporting Actress for Paper Moon in 1973 at 10 years old.

The oldest winner of any Oscar ever is James Ivory, who won Best Adapted Screenplay for Call Me by Your Name in 2017 when he was 89 years old.

Acting-wise, the late, great Christopher Plummer is the oldest winner to date after winning Best Supporting Actor for Beginners in 2011 when he was 82.

Who's got the longest losing streak before winning an Oscar?

That would be composer Victor Young, who received 21 nominations without winning, even when he was twice nominated in four awards at the same Oscars. He won at the 22nd time of asking for Around the World in 80 Days, but it was a posthumous win.

Closely behind, sound re-recording mixer Kevin O'Connell had 20 nominations until he won for Hacksaw Ridge, his 21st nomination.

There must be something about sound because the longest losing streak at the moment belongs to sound engineer Greg P Russell, who regularly works with O'Connell and has 16 nominations without winning.

What movie has received the most Oscar nominations?

Sky, Happy, Smile, Dance, Performing arts, Gesture,

Paramount Pictures

Three movies in Oscar history have picked up 14 nominations: All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land.

A record haul isn't a guarantee of success though as All About Eve and La La Land both only won six awards, although Titanic fared better and took home 11 wins, equalling the record. Talking of which...

And what movie has won the most Oscars?

Alongside Titanic, two other movies have won 11 Oscars: Ben-Hur and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

Even more impressively for the climactic Lord of the Rings movie, it won every single category it was nominated in, the biggest clean sweep ever.

Has anyone ever declined an Oscar?

Three people, actually, although one of them, Dudley Nichols, accepted his award three years later.

George C Scott refused his Best Actor Oscar for Patton because he thought the Oscar ceremony was "a two-hour meat parade" (two hours? We wish), while Marlon Brando refused the Best Actor award for The Godfather due to "the treatment of Native Americans today by the film industry".

Brando sent Sacheen Littlefeather to the Oscars to refuse the award, as you can see in the video below. It didn't go down too well...

Why don't they say "And the winner is..." anymore?

In 1989, the Oscars changed from saying "And the winner is..." to "And the Oscar goes to..." when announcing the winners.

The show producer of the 1989 Oscars Allan Carr changed the phrasing so that it would "not seem as competitive".

Who gave the longest-ever speech after winning an Oscar?

That would be Greer Garson who, after winning Best Actress for Mrs Miniver, delivered a speech that was said to last around six minutes.

Unfortunately, the speech is nowhere to be found these days and all we know is that she started it by saying, "I'm practically unprepared".

Who's won the most Oscars?

That would be none other than Walt Disney, who won 22 Oscars from his 59 nominations (also a record), as well as scooping four honorary Oscars too.

He also holds the record for most nominations in a single ceremony with six, leading to a record four wins. And to top it all off, Walt Disney also has the longest winning streak as he picked up 10 awards in eight consecutive years from 1931 to 1939.

Which movie has received the most nominations without winning an Oscar?

That misfortune is shared by two movies as The Turning Point and The Color Purple both picked up 11 nominations, only to go on and win exactly zero awards.

      Ouch.

Has any movie won all of the 'Big Five' Oscar awards?

silence of the lambs, anthony hopkins as hannibal lecter

      Orion Pictures

Yes, three of them in fact: It Happened One Night, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and The Silence of the Lambs.

The 'Big Five' awards are considered to be Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Screenplay (can be in either screenplay category, original or adapted).

What's the shortest performance to ever win an Oscar?

Beatrice Straight won Best Supporting Actress for Network, which isn't bad work considering she's only on screen for five minutes and two seconds.

What are the shortest and longest movies to win the Best Picture Oscar?

      gone with the wind

      MGM

The shortest Best Picture winner is Marty, clocking in at only 90 minutes, while the longest Best Picture winner is Gone with the Wind at an epic 238 minutes (if you include the overture, intermission, entr'acte, and exit music).

Based solely on runtime, then Lawrence of Arabia holds a claim to the longest Best Picture winner at 222 minutes, just a fraction longer than Gone with the Wind's 221 minutes.

Outside of Best Picture, there have been much longer winners, including all 467 minutes of OJ: Made in America (which won Best Documentary) and 1968's War and Peace (which won Best Foreign Language Film).

The 93rd Academy Awards take place on Sunday, April 25. It will be broadcast live in the UK on Sky Cinema and NOW.
